AI ads are ads where artificial intelligence does part of the work: it generates the creative, decides who sees the ad and what to bid, or serves the ad inside an AI answer such as ChatGPT or Google AI Mode. Most advertisers already buy AI ads, because Performance Max and Advantage+ campaigns run on automated targeting and bidding.
This guide is part of the LLM advertising hub and separates the three meanings, because each one calls for a different decision. The short recommendation: give the machine bids, placements and creative variations, keep the conversion goal, budgets, exclusions and claims under human control, and prove every gain with a holdout test. Product facts are as of October 2026, with reported and speculative claims marked as such.
What are AI ads in 2026?
AI ads in 2026 are ads in which a machine learning system makes, targets or hosts the ad. The term covers three layers that work differently: generative AI that writes copy and builds images or video, automated campaigns that choose audiences, placements and bids, and sponsored placements inside AI assistants and AI search answers.
Each layer has its own products and risks:
- Generative creative. Generative creative is AI that produces ad assets (headlines, images, video, voiceovers) from a prompt, a product photo or your landing page.
- Automated buying. Automated buying is AI that decides which auctions to enter, whom to reach and how much to bid toward your conversion goal.
- Ads in AI answers. Ads in AI answers are sponsored units shown in or next to a response from an AI assistant or AI search feature.
The layers overlap. Microsoft's Copilot documentation says ads in Copilot are built automatically from a campaign's existing text and image assets, and names Performance Max as the campaign type with the most exposure there. So AI in advertising is less a channel than a set of decisions you hand over.
Which AI tools generate the ad creative?
The main ad platforms each ship generative creative tools inside the ad account: Google Ads has Asset studio, Meta has Advantage+ creative, and TikTok has Symphony Creative Studio. These AI tools for advertising generate text, images and video from a prompt, product photos or your landing page, and you approve what runs.
Google. Asset studio is the Google Ads workspace for creating, editing and storing assets. As of October 2026 it builds product scenes from one or two product photos, edits images by prompt, assembles videos and writes headlines. Access has conditions: Google's page on generated images requires an account that has run ads for at least 30 days with a history of policy compliance and excludes sensitive verticals.
Meta. Advantage+ creative is Meta's set of AI tools in Ads Manager that generate and enhance ad variations across single image, video and carousel formats.
TikTok. Symphony Creative Studio is TikTok's free generative video tool. It makes clips and images from simple inputs, adds avatars that read a script or hold a product, and translates and dubs videos into other languages.
AI generated advertising also carries labels. Google embeds SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata in images and videos made with its Google Ads tools, and its AI content label settings add visible overlays on campaigns aimed at the EU, India or New York when assets are marked as AI made or AI edited. Meta shows an "AI info" label in "About this ad" for ads made or significantly edited with its own tools, according to its June 2026 update.
How do Performance Max, AI Max and Advantage+ campaigns buy media with AI?
Performance Max, AI Max for Search campaigns and Advantage+ campaigns are the AI layer that targets and buys. You supply a conversion goal, a budget, creative assets and optional signals, and the system decides which auctions to enter, whom to show the ad to and how much to bid, inside the limits you set.
Performance Max is a goal-based Google Ads campaign type that reaches all Google Ads inventory from one campaign: YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps, per Google's help page. You supply goals and values, assets, audience signals, budgets and exclusions; to compare creative inside it, see Performance Max asset testing.
AI Max for Search campaigns is a set of targeting and creative features you switch on inside an existing Search campaign, not a separate campaign type. Google's help center calls it "a continuous optimization layer for your Search campaigns." Search term matching reaches queries beyond your keywords, text customization writes ad copy for the query, and final URL expansion picks the landing page. Queries it adds appear with an "AI Max" match type in the search terms report.
Advantage+ campaigns are Meta's automated sales, app and leads campaigns. Meta's developer documentation says a campaign reaches the Advantage+ state only when three levers are on: Advantage+ budget, Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ placement. On its Advantage+ audience help page, Meta claims a 7.2% lower cost per result for the Sales and App promotion objectives (as of October 2026), a figure from Meta itself, not an independent benchmark. How targeting inputs work under it is covered in Facebook ads targeting.
Where do ads show up inside AI answers?
Ads inside AI answers run on three major platforms as of October 2026. ChatGPT shows sponsored units below its responses, Google serves ads above, below and within AI Overviews and is testing formats in AI Mode, and Microsoft serves ads in Copilot. Only ChatGPT ads are bought as a separate product; the other two draw on existing campaigns.
ChatGPT. ChatGPT ads, often called OpenAI ads, are sponsored units shown below a response on the Free and Go plans and in logged-out ChatGPT, where ads must be appropriate for all audiences; accounts identified as under 18 and Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see none, per OpenAI's help center. On August 31, 2026 OpenAI reported a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, ads in more than 40 countries and self-serve access in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. See ChatGPT ads for bidding and access, and ChatGPT Ads product feed campaigns for retail.
Google. Google AI ads in AI Overviews come from your existing campaigns. Google's help page says ads can show above or below AI Overviews in all markets where AI Overviews exist, while ads within the overview are limited to English in 12 countries, the US among them. Advertisers cannot target or opt out of the placement, and there is no segmented reporting. For AI Mode, Google said on May 20, 2026 that it is testing two Gemini-built formats, Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, both labeled "Sponsored."
Microsoft. All eligible campaigns are opted in to ads in Copilot automatically, with no opt out. Copilot reads the whole conversation to pick ads, negative keywords still apply, and Microsoft offers no Copilot-specific metrics. Earning organic citations in those same answers is a separate job, covered in AI search engine optimization.
What should you hand to the AI, and what should you keep?
Hand the AI the decisions it makes faster than a person with data it already has: auction bids, placement mix and creative variations. Keep the decisions that define the business: the conversion goal and its value, budgets, brand and legal limits, exclusions and the approval of claims. This guide calls that split the hand-off rule, and every hand-off needs proof.
The hand-off rule has three parts:
- Hand off what the platform sees better: auction-time bids, winning placements and asset combinations.
- Keep what only the business knows: which conversion counts, its value, spend, and what is off limits.
- Prove each hand-off with a test the platform does not grade alone, such as a lift study.
Which AI ads products let you switch the AI off?
Most AI ads products can be switched off or limited, but not all of them. Asset studio, AI Max for Search campaigns, Advantage+ campaigns and ChatGPT ads are optional or reversible, Performance Max allows exclusions but no per-channel switch, and ads in Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot have no opt out as of October 2026.
The table applies the hand-off rule (hand off bids, keep goals, prove gains) to the main AI ads products.
| Product | Layer | The AI decides | You keep | Can you switch it off? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Ads Asset studio | Creative | Image, video and text drafts | Approval of every asset, claims, AI labels | Yes, it is a tool you choose to use |
| Performance Max | Buying | Channel, audience, bid, asset mix | Goals and values, budget, brand and placement exclusions | Exclusions only, no per-channel switch |
| AI Max for Search campaigns | Buying and creative | Extra queries, ad text, landing page | Keywords, brand and URL inclusions or exclusions | Yes, per campaign; search term matching per ad group |
| Advantage+ campaigns | Buying | Budget split, audience, placement | Goal, budget, audience controls, exclusions | Yes, turning off one lever ends the Advantage+ state |
| ChatGPT ads | Ads in AI answers | Which conversations match | Bids, budget, context hints, landing page | Yes, it is a separate buy |
| Ads in Google AI Overviews | Ads in AI answers | Whether your ad shows with an overview | Campaign settings only | No opt out |
| Ads in Microsoft Copilot | Ads in AI answers | Format and conversation match | Negative keywords, campaign settings | No opt out |
How do you evaluate an AI ads product before you spend?
Evaluate an AI ads product on four points before you spend: which conversion it optimizes toward, what it lets you see and exclude, whether you can switch it off, and whether its gains survive a holdout test. A product that fails one of those checks gets a capped test budget with an end date, not a scaled budget.
The reason is that the platform that sells the inventory also counts the results. Karan put it bluntly in an October 7, 2026 Substack post on Performance Max and Advantage+: "You cannot supervise an allocator with the allocator's own reporting." That is an opinion, but it matches how the products are built: ads in AI Overviews and in Copilot have no separate reporting at all.
- Name the conversion it optimizes for. Check that the primary conversion action reflects revenue or qualified leads, not page views or soft engagement.
- List the reports and controls you get. Look for search terms, placements, asset reports and exclusions, and write down what is missing before launch.
- Track outside the platform. Tag traffic with UTM parameters and compare in GA4 or your CRM; for ChatGPT ads, see ChatGPT Ads conversion tracking.
- Run a holdout test. Use a platform experiment or a lift study such as Google Ads Conversion Lift to count the conversions the spend actually caused.
- Decide on a fixed date. Scale, keep or switch off based on cost per incremental conversion, judged on the same conversion definition as your other channels.
Keep speculation separate. The Wall Street Journal reported in June 2025, as relayed by Verdict, that Meta aims to let brands fully automate ad creation and targeting by the end of 2026. That is a report about plans, not a product in your account.
Common mistakes with AI ads
The common mistakes with AI ads come from trusting the automation further than its inputs and reports allow. Most of them are fixed with a better conversion goal, a claims check on generated assets, correct AI labels and one controlled change at a time instead of a full switch.
- Treating the platform report as proof. Platform reports can include conversions that would have happened anyway, such as brand searches and returning customers. Confirm big decisions with a holdout or lift test.
- Feeding automation a soft conversion. A system told to chase form starts or add to carts finds cheap ones. Optimize toward revenue, qualified leads or values that match profit.
- Approving generated creative without a claims check. Google tells advertisers to review generated assets for accuracy and misleading claims, and says generated assets are not guaranteed approval. Read every asset as if a regulator will.
- Ignoring AI labels in regulated markets. Campaigns aimed at the EU, India or New York can carry visible AI labels. Mark AI made assets correctly instead of hoping nobody notices.
- Assuming you can keep ads out of AI answers. Ads in AI Overviews and Copilot have no opt out. Use negative keywords, exclusions and landing pages that work for a reader who already got an answer.
- Switching on every AI setting at once. AI Max, broad match and new creative in one week make the result unreadable. Change one lever per test.
