A ChatGPT Ads product feed campaign is a campaign type in Ads Manager, OpenAI's platform for creating and managing ChatGPT Ads campaigns, that builds ads straight from your product catalog. You upload a feed, choose which products each ad group may use, and one ad template fills in each product's title, price and image when an ad serves.
This guide is for retailers who know the basics of ChatGPT Ads. It covers the feed fields, the setup path, the late September 2026 updates and how the feed compares with Google Merchant Center, the Google tool where retailers manage the product data behind Shopping ads and Performance Max. It is part of our LLM advertising hub; for formats, bidding and who sees the ads, start with the ChatGPT Ads explainer.
The short answer for most stores: feed products through a hosted URL, scheduled SFTP or the Shopify app, because items expire after 2 weeks, set is_ads_eligible to true, and track purchases with a value before launch. Without those three, products stop serving or results cannot be judged.
What is a ChatGPT Ads product feed campaign?
A ChatGPT Ads product feed campaign is a feed-based campaign that creates ads at scale from a product catalog. OpenAI built it for retail advertisers with large or frequently changing catalogs, so product details, availability and ad metadata stay current without writing an ad for every item.
The structure is simple, according to OpenAI's help article on product feed campaigns. The campaign owns the feed. Each ad group inherits that feed and applies product filters to pick a subset. Each ad group then needs one ad template, which the developer docs describe as a product_ad_template that pulls values such as {{product.title}} and {{product.price}} from the feed at delivery.
Two limits matter as of October 2026:
- Ads only. OpenAI says products from an ads feed are eligible for ads during the beta and do not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations.
- Country targeting only. New product feed campaigns support geographic targeting and exclusions at country level only.
Matching still follows the general ChatGPT Ads logic: OpenAI decides whether a conversation is relevant, and a product that passes your filters is not guaranteed impressions. Product review and other serving factors still apply.
What changed for product feeds in late September 2026?
In an email to advertisers reported by Search Engine Roundtable on September 30, 2026, OpenAI announced five Ads Manager updates: bulk creation of product feed campaigns, product review status, extra conversion reporting through the API, separate account, brand and legal names, and new markets. Some are already in OpenAI's docs, others so far only in that email.
Confirmed in OpenAI's docs:
- Separate names. As of September 25, 2026, you manage Account Name, Brand Name and Legal Name separately under Settings, General, per the account setup article. A Brand Name change pauses ad serving until brand review approves it, and a Legal Name change restarts business review.
- Goal and non-goal events. The reporting docs describe an
attributed_eventsoption in the Insights API. - New markets. OpenAI's availability list now includes Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan.
Reported from OpenAI's email, not yet in the help center:
- Bulk creation. You can create multiple product feed campaigns and ad groups from a spreadsheet, with ad templates generated automatically. OpenAI's Ads Manager Beta Overview still says CSV upload does not support creating product feed campaigns.
- Product review status. The Products tab now shows review status and why products were rejected. The help article still describes the tab as a reporting view of delivered products only.
Which fields does a ChatGPT Ads product feed need?
A ChatGPT Ads product feed needs nine required fields per product: item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability and price. Products only reach ads when is_ads_eligible is true, and product pages and images must be publicly accessible at absolute URLs, with HTTPS preferred.
Field names come from OpenAI's products specification. A few formats trip up feeds built for other channels:
- Price is a decimal amount in major units, a space and a three-letter currency code, for example
79.99 USD. - Availability takes
in_stock,out_of_stock,pre_order,backorderorunknown. - Image URL must point directly to the image file, such as a JPEG or PNG, not to a page.
is_ads_eligibleleft empty means the product is not processed for ads unless a feed-level default applies.item_idmust stay stable between uploads, or reporting and filters break.
For grouping, the spec supports custom_label_0 to custom_label_4 and an ads_metadata field with your own keys. Ad group filters can then select on brand, price, category or those labels.
Ads Manager accepts a CSV or TXT upload, a hosted HTTPS URL or an SFTP connection. OpenAI notes that items expire after 2 weeks and recommends a hosted URL or automated SFTP. For fast price or stock changes, the developer docs point to the Delta API.
How do you set up a product feed campaign in Ads Manager?
You set up a ChatGPT Ads product feed campaign in two parts: first a feed under Tools, Feeds, then a campaign with the Product feed campaign type. The steps follow OpenAI's help center as of October 2026, with country, category and conversion tracking checked before anything else.
- Check eligibility. Confirm the billed legal entity is in an available country and that your product categories are allowed under OpenAI's ad policies.
- Install conversion tracking. Set up the OpenAI pixel or the Conversions API with a purchase event before launch, so the first clicks are measured.
- Create the feed. In Ads Manager, go to Tools, Feeds and create a new feed.
- Import products. Choose a CSV or TXT upload, a hosted URL or SFTP. Pick an automated method if your catalog changes weekly or faster.
- Wait for validation. Processing takes a few minutes to a few hours. Check Upload History for errors and fix them at the source.
- Create the campaign. On the Campaigns tab, create a campaign and select Product feed as the campaign type. Set countries and budget.
- Build ad groups with filters. Split products by margin, category or label and keep Maximize results, the default bid strategy.
- Create one ad template per ad group. As of October 2026 the template only lets you choose the image field; the rest comes from the feed.
- Review and launch. Check the selected feed, the product count, titles, images, landing pages and the template preview, then submit.
If you prefer the spreadsheet route, OpenAI's September email describes a Product feed template under Campaigns, Bulk uploads. Shopify merchants have a third option: OpenAI announced on September 16, 2026 a ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store, with products integrated through Shopify Catalog.
How do ChatGPT Ads product feeds compare with Google Merchant Center feeds?
ChatGPT Ads product feeds and Google Merchant Center feeds ask for almost the same core product data, so most Shopping feeds can be mapped with little work. The differences sit in field names, the ads eligibility flag, how products are grouped and how much review and reporting detail each platform documents.
| Criterion | ChatGPT Ads product feed | Google Merchant Center feed |
|---|---|---|
| Required core fields | item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability, price | id, title, description, link, image_link, availability, price, brand for most new products |
| Ads opt in | is_ads_eligible must be true per product or by feed default | Google controls each product's approval status in Merchant Center |
| Grouping products | Ad group filters on brand, price, category, ads_metadata and custom_label_0 to 4 | Listing groups by category, brand, item ID, condition, product type, channel and custom labels |
| Review status | Products tab, announced by email in September 2026 | Status column: Under review, Processing, Approved, Limited, Not approved |
Google's side comes from the Merchant Center product data specification, the product status guide and the Performance Max listing groups article. The practical upshot: rename id, link and image_link, add seller_name and is_ads_eligible, and reformat price if your feed tool writes it differently. Budget logic differs too, so read Google Ads cost before you move money between the two.
How do you read product and conversion results?
ChatGPT Ads reports product results in the Products tab and through the Insights API, and conversion results against the campaign goal plus, since September 2026, other attributed events. Product rows appear only after delivery starts, and conversions update in daily processing, so judge a new campaign on days, not hours.
The help article says product rows can take up to seven hours to first appear after delivery begins. The Products tab is a reporting view: products without delivery do not show there, which makes it the wrong place to check whether your feed loaded. Use Upload History for that.
For deeper analysis, the reporting docs list a product segment with product.feed_id, product.item_id, impressions, clicks, spend and CTR. Product reporting keeps about 30 days of history, so export it if you want longer trends.
The September addition is the attributed_events option. A campaign can optimize for one event, for example add to cart, while the API also returns attributed purchases with their value, without changing the goal. Default attribution windows are 30 days after a click and 1 day after an impression. Those windows will not match GA4 or Google Ads, so compare platforms with care, as explained in our guide to attribution models.
Should your store launch product feed campaigns now?
The go or wait rule says a store should launch ChatGPT Ads product feed campaigns now when three conditions hold: the billed entity and categories are eligible, the feed refreshes automatically, and purchases are tracked with a value. If any of the three is missing, fix that first, because each one blocks either delivery or a fair verdict.
Use this go or wait rule as a quick test:
- Go: the country is on OpenAI's list, the categories are allowed, the feed refreshes daily through a hosted URL, SFTP or the Shopify app, and a purchase event with value fires through the pixel or Conversions API.
- Wait: the feed is a manual export that nobody owns. Products expire after 2 weeks, so delivery will quietly shrink.
- Wait: only page views or clicks are tracked. Without a purchase event you cannot optimize toward sales or judge return on spend.
- Wait: the categories you want to push are restricted or not allowed under the ad policies.
Reported data suggests retailers are moving early. Bloomberry's analysis of about 15,000 companies with the ChatGPT Ads pixel (September 2026) found retail 2.3 times overrepresented among advertisers. That is a pixel count, not a performance claim. Paid placements also do not replace organic visibility in ChatGPT answers; to see where your brand already appears, use one of the AI visibility tools.
Common mistakes with ChatGPT Ads product feeds
The most common mistakes with ChatGPT Ads product feeds come from treating the feed as a one-time export and the Products tab as a feed checker. Both lead to products that silently stop serving. The fixes are mostly about automation, stable IDs and reading the right report.
- Uploading the feed once by hand. Items expire after 2 weeks. Use a hosted URL, scheduled SFTP or the Shopify app so products stay live.
- Forgetting
is_ads_eligible. An empty value means the product is not processed for ads. Set it totrueper product or with a feed-level default. - Checking the Products tab to see if the upload worked. The tab only shows products with delivery data. Check Upload History for processing errors.
- Changing item IDs between uploads. Unstable IDs break filters and product reporting. Keep
item_idfixed per item or variant. - Renaming the brand mid-campaign. A Brand Name change pauses ad serving until review approves it. Plan name changes outside peak periods.
- Judging on the campaign goal alone. If you optimize for a softer event, pull attributed purchases through the Insights API before deciding to scale or stop.
