AI visibility tools track how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention your brand or cite your pages for a set of prompts. They run those prompts on a schedule, store the answers and turn them into metrics such as mentions, citations and share of voice against competitors.
That makes them the closest thing to rank tracking for AI answers, with one big difference: there is no stable ranking to track. Answers change between runs, between countries and between users. This guide explains what the tools measure, how they collect data and where it breaks, which types of tools exist as of October 2026, and how to set up tracking you can trust. It is part of our generative engine optimization hub.
What AI visibility tools measure
AI visibility tools measure how often and how favorably your brand shows up in AI answers for the prompts you track. The core metrics are mentions, citations, share of voice, position and sentiment, and most vendors define them in similar ways.
- Mentions. How often your brand name appears in the answer text. Ahrefs defines it as "how often your brand name appears in AI answer text."
- Citations. How often the AI links to your pages or domain as a source. A brand can be mentioned without being cited, and a page can be cited without the brand being recommended.
- Share of voice. Your mentions or citations as a share of all brands in the same prompt set. It is the metric to watch when you compare yourself with competitors.
- Position. Where you appear when you are named. Peec AI describes it as where you rank "when you do appear, compared with other brands."
- Sentiment. Whether the answer describes your brand positively, neutrally or negatively.
- Prompts tracked. The list of questions the tool runs, often tagged by topic, product or buying stage. Every other metric is only as good as this list.
Some tools add a composite score. Semrush's AI Visibility Score, for example, compares how often your brand is mentioned with the median for your top industry competitors, according to its knowledge base. Composite scores are handy for a dashboard, but check which inputs drive them before you report them upward.
How AI visibility tools collect data, and where it breaks
AI visibility tools collect data by sending prompts to AI systems, either through official APIs or by automating the consumer interface the way a person would, and then parsing the answers. Both methods return a sample of possible answers, not the answer every buyer sees.
API versus interface. Peec AI's documentation says it "uses browser automation to interact with AI platforms through their web interfaces" and argues that API responses can differ in sources from what users see. A study by Surfer, published September 25, 2026, tested 1,000 prompts across five AI products both ways. It reported that the brands mentioned overlapped only 15.5% to 23.8% between API and scraped answers, and that ChatGPT's interface cited 12.1 sources on average against 3.1 through the API. Surfer sells AI tracking itself, so read this as vendor research, but the direction is clear: the collection method changes the result.
Answers are not deterministic. OpenAI's cookbook states that its Chat Completions API is "non-deterministic by default," meaning outputs may differ from request to request. Google's AI features documentation adds that AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use different models and techniques," and both may use query fan-out, so the links they show vary.
Answers are personal. OpenAI's ChatGPT search help article explains that ChatGPT can use saved memories and a general location based on IP address to rewrite a search query. A tracker running from a clean account in one country cannot reproduce that.
No inside access. Google's guide to generative AI features warns that "no third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems." Every tool observes outputs from the outside.
The practical consequence: treat AI visibility tracking like a survey. Larger prompt sets, repeated runs and stable settings give you trends you can act on. A single answer, or a weekly swing of a few points, tells you very little.
Types of AI visibility tools
There are three types of AI visibility tools: free first-party reports from search engines, dedicated AI visibility trackers, and SEO suites that added an AI visibility module. They differ mainly in what they can see, whether they cover competitors and how much control you get over prompts.
First-party reports show real data about your own site but nothing about competitors. Google's Generative AI performance report in Search Console, available to all sites since August 31, 2026, shows impressions in AI features by page, country, device and date. Bing's AI Performance report shows total citations, cited pages and a sample of grounding queries across Copilot and AI summaries in Bing.
Dedicated trackers such as Profound, Peec AI and OtterlyAI are built around prompt tracking across several AI engines, with competitor benchmarks, sentiment and source analysis.
SEO suites with AI modules such as the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit and Ahrefs Brand Radar add AI tracking to the keyword and backlink data you may already pay for. Ahrefs, for example, models its AI Visibility Index prompts from its keyword database, so you can look up a brand without writing prompts first.
| Tool | Type | AI engines listed by the vendor | Prompts | Entry pricing | Collection method stated |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | First-party, own site only | AI Overviews, AI Mode, Discover AI features | Not prompt based | Free | Google's own data |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | First-party, own site only | Copilot, AI summaries in Bing, select partners | Not prompt based | Free | Bing's own data |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | SEO suite module | "Platforms like Google AI Mode and ChatGPT" | 25 tracked prompts | $99 per month | Runs queries through LLMs |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | SEO suite module | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot (Claude in Custom Prompts) | Custom prompts plus a prompt index | A few custom prompts included in paid Ahrefs plans | Not stated |
| Profound | Dedicated tracker | Up to nine engines on Enterprise, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Claude | 50 prompts on the 7 day trial, custom on Enterprise | Free trial, Enterprise custom | Runs structured prompts |
| Peec AI | Dedicated tracker | Choose three, including ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot and Gemini | 50, 150 or 350 by plan | Not listed in page text | Browser automation on the interface |
| OtterlyAI | Dedicated tracker | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot (AI Mode, Gemini, Claude as add-ons) | 15, 100 or 400 by plan | $29 per month | Not stated |
How to choose AI visibility tools
Choose AI visibility tools on four criteria: the engines your buyers actually use, how much control you have over prompts, how openly the vendor explains data collection, and the cost per tracked answer. Brand names and dashboards matter less than these four.
- Engine coverage. Many entry plans cover three or four engines and charge extra for the rest. OtterlyAI, for example, sells Google AI Mode, Gemini and Claude as add-ons. Pay for the engines your audience uses, not for the longest list.
- Prompt control. Custom prompts let you track the exact questions buyers ask. Database prompts, as in Ahrefs' index, are faster to start with and better for market-wide benchmarks, but Ahrefs says those question sets are re-tested monthly, while custom prompts can run daily. Most teams need both views.
- Collection transparency. Ask whether answers come from the API or the interface, which country and language they run in, whether the account is logged in and how often each prompt runs. A vendor that cannot answer clearly is selling a number you cannot explain.
- Cost per answer. Divide the price by prompts times engines times runs per month. Peec AI shows this logic on its own pricing page, where monthly AI answers equal prompts times active models times frequency.
Also check exports and API access if you plan to combine the data with Search Console, analytics or CRM data. On several plans these sit only in higher tiers.
How to set up AI visibility tracking
Set up AI visibility tracking by starting with the free first-party reports, writing a prompt set that mirrors real buyer questions, and only then adding a paid tool to benchmark competitors. The steps below take you from a manual baseline to a stable monthly report.
- Turn on the first-party reports. Verify your site in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and note your current AI feature impressions and citations. This is your free AI visibility checker for your own pages.
- Write the prompt set. List the questions buyers ask at each stage: category questions, comparisons, "best" lists, pricing and problem questions. Write two or three phrasings per topic.
- Run a manual baseline. Run a sample of those prompts yourself in the main engines, logged out and in a private window, and record mentions, citations and competitors named. It costs nothing and shows whether a paid tool is worth it.
- Pick a tool and lock the settings. Choose engines, country, language and frequency, then keep them fixed. Changing settings mid-stream breaks your trend line.
- Tag prompts. Group prompts by topic, product and funnel stage so you can see where you are strong and where competitors own the answer.
- Review sources, not only scores. Look at which pages and third-party sites get cited for prompts you lose. That list is your content and PR backlog.
- Report monthly trends. Report share of voice and citations per topic over several weeks, next to AI referral traffic. Do not report daily swings.
How to connect AI visibility to traffic and revenue
Connect AI visibility to business results by pairing tracker data with referral clicks and conversions from AI platforms in your analytics. Visibility without a link to traffic or pipeline is hard to defend in a budget meeting.
OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so ChatGPT search visits show up in GA4 as their own source. Gemini is reported to have started tagging its links too, and our guide to Gemini referral traffic shows how to group all AI assistants in one GA4 channel. Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the regular Performance report under the Web search type. Build a channel group for AI referrals and decide which attribution model you will judge them with, because AI answers often influence a decision that converts later through another channel.
When visibility is low for prompts that matter, look at your own signals before you blame the tool. A Search Engine Journal column from October 1, 2026 lists structured data that does not match visible content, stale prices in markup and inconsistent entity data across the web as common causes of weak AI visibility. Those are fixes on your side, and our guide to AI search engine optimization covers the content and technical work in more detail.
Organic AI visibility is also not the only way into AI answers. If you need guaranteed placement next to answers, that is paid media; see our guide to ChatGPT ads. Some trackers, such as OtterlyAI, now include ChatGPT ads tracking in their plans.
Common mistakes with AI visibility tools
- Treating one answer as the truth. AI answers vary by run, location and user context. Track enough prompts and runs to see a trend, and report averages over weeks.
- Tracking prompts nobody asks. A prompt set full of branded or keyword-style queries inflates your score. Write prompts from sales calls, support tickets and search data.
- Changing settings mid-stream. Switching engines, country or prompt wording resets your baseline. Lock the setup and add new prompts as a separate tag.
- Ignoring the collection method. API answers and interface answers can name different brands. Ask the vendor how it collects data and keep that method constant.
- Skipping the free reports. Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools show real impressions and citations for your site. Use them as the baseline every paid number is checked against.
- Reporting visibility without traffic. A rising share of voice means little if AI referrals and conversions do not move. Report both side by side.
