Instagram Ads: Formats, Placements and What Works

Instagram ads are paid ads you buy in Meta Ads Manager that appear in Instagram Feed, profile feed, Explore home, Stories, Reels and search results. Pick the format by goal: single image or carousel for Feed, full-screen 9:16 video for Reels and Stories, and collection for mobile shopping.

Key takeaways

  • Instagram ads are bought in Meta Ads Manager and, as of October 2026, can run in six Instagram placements: Feed, profile feed, Explore home, Stories, Reels and search results.
  • Instagram Reels ads only accept full-screen vertical assets, while Instagram Feed accepts ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16 and may crop taller media to 4:5.
  • Instagram Explore home is not a standalone placement, so an ad only runs there when Instagram Feed is also selected in the same ad set.
  • The two-ratio asset rule gives every Instagram ad one 4:5 or 1:1 version for Feed and one 9:16 version for Stories and Reels, so no placement gets a cropped or letterboxed creative.
  • A business can run Instagram ads without an Instagram account by using its Facebook Page as the ad identity, but a connected Instagram professional account shows the brand's own handle and allows ads from existing posts.

Instagram ads are paid ads you create in Meta Ads Manager that appear between posts, Stories and Reels on Instagram. What works is matching the format to the placement: vertical 9:16 video for Reels and Stories, 4:5 or square images and carousels for Feed, and collection ads for mobile shopping.

This guide is part of the Meta ads hub and covers placements, formats, a placement decision table, setup requirements and creative specs as of October 2026. Instagram reaches a large audience: Mark Zuckerberg said in September 2025 that the app had 3 billion monthly active users, CNBC reported. For pricing, see how much Instagram ads cost.

Where do Instagram ads appear in 2026?

Instagram ads appear in six placements as of October 2026: Instagram Feed, Instagram profile feed, Instagram Explore home, Instagram Stories, Instagram Reels and Instagram search results. A placement is a place in Meta's apps where an ad can show, and you choose them at the ad set level in Meta Ads Manager.

Meta's page About ad placements across Meta technologies describes each one:

  • Instagram Feed: the home feed in the app and on desktop and mobile web.
  • Instagram profile feed: the feed view of public profiles of people 18 and up.
  • Instagram Explore home: a tile in the Explore grid. Tapping a tile opens a Reels viewer, where Reels ads can also show.
  • Instagram Stories and Instagram Reels: full-screen placements between Stories and in the Reels tab.
  • Instagram search results: ads shown when people search by keyword in the app.

Sponsored ads in Instagram now carry an "Ad" label instead of "Sponsored", per Meta's page on ad formats available on Instagram. Threads, Meta's text app, is a separate placement. TechCrunch reported in January 2026 that Meta was expanding Threads ads to all users worldwide in a gradual rollout.

Which Instagram ad formats can you use?

Instagram ads use five creative formats: single image, single video, carousel, collection and Flexible. An ad format is the way the creative is built and shown, and the same format can run in several placements. Partnership ads are not a separate format but an identity option that runs an ad from a creator's handle.

A carousel is an ad with 2 to 10 swipeable cards, each with its own headline and link, per the carousel specifications. A collection ad shows a cover image or video above a product grid and opens a full-screen Instant Experience; Meta's collection page says it runs on mobile placements only.

Which Instagram ads placement and format fit your goal?

The right Instagram ads placement and format follow from the campaign objective. Awareness and engagement goals suit Reels and Stories video, traffic and leads suit Feed images and carousels plus vertical video, and sales with a catalog suit collection and carousel ads, with Advantage+ placements on.

Advantage+ placements is a Meta Ads Manager setting that lets Meta's delivery system show an ad in every eligible placement across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and Audience Network instead of a list you pick by hand, per Meta's Advantage+ placements page. All six objectives in Ads Manager (Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales) can use Instagram placements, per Meta's Instagram ad objectives table. The decision table below is a starting setup, not a Meta rule.

The last column follows the two-ratio asset rule: every ad gets one 4:5 or 1:1 version for Feed and one 9:16 version for Stories and Reels. A small budget belongs in one ad set with all placements on, as the Instagram ads cost guide explains.

What does a business need before running Instagram ads?

An Instagram ads business setup needs three things: an ad account in Meta Ads Manager with a payment method, an identity for the ads (a Facebook Page, an Instagram professional account or both) and creative that meets the Instagram specs. An Instagram professional account is a business or creator account with access to ads and insights.

Meta's page on the Instagram ad placement lists the requirements: an Instagram account as the face of the ads, compliant media and an objective that supports Instagram. A Facebook Page alone also works, since Meta can run ads on Instagram with your Facebook Page. A connected account lets you pick "Use existing post" to turn a published Feed post, Reel or active Story into an ad, per Meta's guide to ads from existing Instagram posts.

  1. Connect the accounts. Add the Instagram professional account to your business portfolio.
  2. Create the campaign. In Ads Manager, click "+ Create" and choose an objective that supports Instagram.
  3. Set the ad set. Define budget, schedule, audience and placements.
  4. Build the ad. Choose the Instagram account under Identity, add creative in both ratios and tag the destination URL with a UTM builder.
  5. Preview every placement. Check the Instagram previews before you publish.

The Meta ads beginner guide explains the account structure behind these steps.

What creative works in Instagram Feed, Stories and Reels ads?

Instagram Feed ads fit 4:5 or square media, while Stories and Reels ads need full-screen 9:16 media with key text and logos kept away from the edges. Reels video should carry sound, show the brand early and use original or royalty-free audio, because licensed music is not allowed.

The specs as of October 2026, from Meta's help center:

  • Feed: ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16, but taller media may be cropped to 4:5; at least 1080 x 1080 pixels; video up to 60 minutes. URLs in the caption are not clickable, per the Feed design requirements.
  • Stories: 9:16 recommended at 1080 x 1920 pixels; images show for five seconds by default, per the Stories design requirements.
  • Reels: full-screen vertical video up to 15 minutes, no licensed music, and no face and camera effects, GIFs or product tags, per Create Instagram Reels ads.

Meta's guidance on the safe zone says to keep the top, bottom and side edges of 9:16 ads free of key text and logos, and to leave the bottom 40% free when a Reels ad carries a disclaimer. The "Safe zone guardrail" toggle in Ads Manager shows that area. For Instagram ads templates, Meta's Stories templates turn a single image ad into a vertical Stories ad with movement.

Should you use Advantage+ placements or choose Instagram placements manually?

Advantage+ placements is Meta's automatic placement setting, and it is the default choice for most Instagram ads because it lets Meta's delivery system spend the budget across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and Audience Network wherever results are cheapest. Manual placements make sense only when the creative, the audience or brand safety rules truly limit where an ad can run.

Meta's Advantage+ placements page states, as of October 2026, that in a Meta experiment Advantage+ placements delivered an 11.7% lower cost per action on average than manual placements. Meta also says on its placements page that "adding more placements does not increase the cost of your ad."

To run on Instagram only, open "Show more settings" and select Instagram under Platforms, per How to create Instagram ads. Instagram Explore home is not a standalone placement: Meta's Explore setup page requires Instagram Feed too and labels Explore home metrics as in development. Read placement results with the attribution models you use, and narrow audiences with Facebook ads targeting only where needed.

Common mistakes with Instagram ads

Most Instagram ads mistakes come from creative that does not fit the placement or from settings that block delivery. Both raise the cost per result before the audience or bid plays a role, and both are fixed in the ad setup rather than in the budget.

  • Running one horizontal video everywhere. Reels only accepts full-screen vertical assets, so a 16:9 video loses that placement. Follow the two-ratio asset rule.
  • Putting text at the edges of 9:16 creative. The profile icon, caption and call-to-action button cover the edges. Keep text inside the safe zone.
  • Selecting Explore home without Feed. Explore home only runs with Instagram Feed selected; otherwise the ad never shows there.
  • Restricting to Instagram by habit. Fewer placements give Meta less room to find cheap results. Restrict only for a clear reason.
  • Using licensed music in Reels ads. Meta does not allow it; use original audio or royalty-free tracks.
  • Boosting when you need conversions. Boosted posts have fewer targeting options than Ads Manager campaigns, and adding funds in the Instagram iOS app can trigger a 30% Apple service fee as of October 2026, per Meta's page on boosted posts and Meta ads.

FAQ

Do I need an Instagram business account to run Instagram ads?

No. Meta lets you run ads on Instagram with only a Facebook Page, which then acts as the voice of the ad. A connected Instagram professional account is still the better setup, because the ad shows your own handle and you can turn existing posts, Reels and Stories into ads.

Is boosting an Instagram post the same as running Instagram ads?

A boosted post is an ad, but it is built from a post you already published and offers fewer customization and targeting options than a campaign in Meta Ads Manager. Boosting works for quick reach on a post that already performs. For sales, leads or tracked conversions, build the campaign in Ads Manager.

Can I run ads only on Instagram and not on Facebook?

Yes. In the placements section of the ad set, choose manual placements, open Show more settings and select only Instagram under Platforms. Meta recommends keeping all placements on, because its delivery system then buys results where they are cheapest, so restrict to Instagram only when the creative or audience truly fits Instagram alone.

Which Instagram ad format should a small business start with?

Start with one short vertical video for Stories and Reels plus a 4:5 or square image or carousel for Feed, in a single ad. That covers every Instagram placement with one asset set. Add a collection ad later if you sell several products and have a product catalog.

How long can an Instagram Reels ad be?

Meta allows Instagram Reels ad videos of up to 15 minutes in a full-screen vertical format. Shorter videos with the key message and the brand in the first seconds suit the placement better. Use original audio or royalty-free music, because Reels ads cannot use licensed music.

Why do my Instagram ads show Ad instead of Sponsored?

Meta changed the label on Facebook and Instagram ads. Ads that used to carry a Sponsored label now show an Ad label instead. The change affects only the label, not how the ad is bought, delivered or reported.
