TikTok Spark Ads: How They Work and How to Set Them Up

TikTok Spark Ads are ads that run an existing organic TikTok post, from your own account or from a creator who authorizes it, so the views, likes, comments and follows stay on the original post. You build them in TikTok Ads Manager with a linked account or a video code, at normal auction prices.

Key takeaways

  • TikTok Spark Ads run an existing organic post as an ad, and the views, likes, comments, shares and follows they earn stay on that original post.
  • A creator authorizes one post for Spark Ads by turning on Ad authorization in the TikTok app and generating a video code valid for 7, 30, 60 or 365 days.
  • Spark Ads carry no separate TikTok fee: they run in the same auction and need the same minimum daily budgets of $50 per campaign and $20 per ad group as other ads.
  • Since January 2026, TikTok requires most new campaigns to be linked to a TikTok account, which phases out Custom Identity, the old way to publish non-Spark ads.
  • The Spark Fit Check picks a Spark Ad when the post has organic proof, the authorization outlasts the flight and the caption is final, and picks an ads-only post for fast creative testing.

TikTok Spark Ads are ads that run an existing organic TikTok post, from your own account or a creator who authorizes it, instead of a separate ad-only video. Views, likes, comments, shares and follows stay on the original post, and you set them up in TikTok Ads Manager with a linked account or a creator's video code.

This guide is part of the TikTok and Snapchat ads hub and reflects TikTok's Business Help Center as of October 2026. The short recommendation: run Spark Ads for posts that already work organically or come from creators, and keep ads-only posts for fast creative testing. An ads-only post is a video published to a linked TikTok account with TikTok's "Show through ads only" setting on, so it runs as an ad but does not appear on the public profile. For the general campaign setup, start with how to advertise on TikTok.

How are TikTok Spark Ads different from non-Spark ads and Promote?

TikTok Spark Ads run a real, public TikTok post as the ad, so engagement builds on that post and the profile behind it. Non-Spark ads run a video that only exists as an ad. Promote boosts your own post from inside the TikTok app, with fewer settings than TikTok Ads Manager.

TikTok's About Spark Ads page calls Spark Ads "a native ad format" that uses organic posts and their features in advertising. A non-Spark ad is an ad whose video is uploaded in Ads Manager and does not live on a public profile. Historically those ran under a Custom Identity, a display name and profile image set in Ads Manager. TikTok's Identity article still describes Custom Identity as "the only way to publish non-Spark ads", but TikTok is phasing it out: according to its Custom Identity update, starting January 2026 all new campaigns must be linked to a TikTok account, with exemptions such as Sales (TikTok Shop) and catalog campaigns.

In practice, the 2026 choice is between a post that shows on the profile and a post set to show through ads only on that same linked account. Promote is the in-app tool for boosting videos and LIVEs, open to users aged 18 and older.

Which posts can run as Spark Ads, and who has to authorize them?

Any public organic TikTok post can run as a Spark Ad once its owner authorizes it, either your own account's posts or a creator's. Authorization happens in one of three ways: a linked TikTok account, a single-post video code from the creator, or posts pushed from TikTok Ads Manager to an account authorized through Business Center.

TikTok's Manual and Search campaign guide lists these three sources. Ads Manager labels the identities "Use account owned by you" and "Use other authorized account or post", per the Identity article. Each TikTok account's posts can be used in up to 2,000 ads, and each Ads Manager account supports up to 10,000 Spark Ads.

Linking an account runs through Business Center. An Admin opens Accounts, then TikTok accounts, clicks View on the account and links it to advertiser accounts, as the account linking article explains. An agency's Business Center can link the same TikTok account to its own ad accounts without access to yours.

For paid creator deals, the TikTok Creator Marketplace inside TikTok One handles the brief, payment and Spark Ads authorization in one project. Some limits apply to every route: banned organic posts are rejected, sparked videos can be up to 10 minutes long, and a private video becomes public once a campaign uses it.

How does a creator generate a Spark Ads code?

A creator generates a Spark Ads code in the TikTok app: open the post, tap the three dots, open Ad settings, turn on Ad authorization, tap Generate, choose an authorization period of 7, 30, 60 or 365 days and copy the code. The advertiser then pastes that code into TikTok Ads Manager.

A Spark Ads code (TikTok calls it a video code) is a one-post permission key that lets one advertiser run that post as an ad for a set period. The steps follow TikTok's Smart+ Spark Ads article.

  1. Allow authorized posts. The creator checks that ad authorization is allowed in the app settings.
  2. Open Ad settings on the post. Tap the three dots on the video, then Ad Settings.
  3. Turn on Ad authorization and generate the code. Switch on the Ad authorization toggle, tap Generate and pick 7, 30, 60 or 365 days, then tap Copy Code and send it to the advertiser.
  4. Apply for authorization in Ads Manager. The advertiser goes to Tools, the Creative tab, Creative library, Spark ads posts, clicks Apply for Authorization and pastes the code.

Duets and Stitches need two codes, one from each creator. The caption cannot be edited once the post is authorized, so finalize it first.

How do you create TikTok Spark Ads in Ads Manager?

You create TikTok Spark Ads inside a normal campaign: pick an objective, set up the ad group, then in the ad's creative section choose an authorized post from the TikTok posts tab instead of uploading a video. Spark Ads work with most auction objectives, from Reach and Traffic to Lead generation and Sales.

The About Spark Ads page lists the supported auction objectives: Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Community interaction, App promotion, Conversions, Lead generation and Sales. The flow below follows the Manual and Search campaign guide.

  1. Start a campaign. In TikTok Ads Manager, open the Campaign tab, click +Create and choose an objective.
  2. Finish the campaign and ad group settings. Set budget, placement, targeting and optimization event as usual.
  3. Open the creative section. In Ad creatives, click + Add videos or images.
  4. Pick the post. Open the TikTok posts tab and select the post, or click Add post to authorize new ones, up to 20 video codes at a time.
  5. Complete the ad details. Add the call to action and a destination URL with UTM parameters.
  6. Publish. Click Publish all and wait for ad review.

Spark and non-Spark ads can share one ad group. The display name and post text come from the organic post.

What do TikTok Spark Ads cost?

TikTok Spark Ads have no separate format fee: they run in the same auction as every other TikTok ad, with the same minimum daily budgets of $50 at campaign level and $20 at ad group level. The real extra cost is the creator, who may charge for the video and for the right to run it.

TikTok's budget article sets those minimums, and the auction decides what you pay per impression or result. TikTok One, the platform where brands hire creators, charges no service fee to advertisers or creators, although payment provider fees and sales tax can apply. Creators set their own rates, and TikTok publishes no standard price, so no fair benchmark exists.

TikTok's own performance claims favor the format, and they are TikTok's data, not independent tests. Its Spark Ads 101 article reports a 134% higher completion rate and a 157% higher 6-second view-through rate than standard In-Feed Ads, based on 2022 internal A/B tests. In a May 2026 TikTok One article, TikTok says creator content boosted with Spark Ads drove a 159% higher engagement rate than non-creator content posted in Ads Manager for North American clients, "even though the CPM was the same for both types." Judge your own campaigns on cost per conversion, not engagement.

When should you choose TikTok Spark Ads over ads-only posts?

Choose TikTok Spark Ads when the post has organic proof, you hold an authorization that outlasts the campaign and the caption is final. Choose an ads-only post when you need to test many hooks or edits quickly. The Spark Fit Check turns that into four yes or no questions you can answer before every launch.

The Spark Fit Check is a decision rule for picking the format per creative, not per account:

  • Organic proof. Has the post already earned real comments or above-average views organically?
  • Authorization covers the flight. Is the code or account authorization longer than the planned campaign, with room to extend?
  • Caption is final. Is the creator's caption something you would approve as ad copy, given that it cannot change after authorization?
  • Low iteration need. Will this exact cut run for weeks rather than being replaced by new hook variants every few days?

Four yes answers means run it as a Spark Ad. Three means a Spark Ad with a short test budget. Two or fewer means an ads-only post, and you test the winning version as a Spark Ad later. A no on authorization overrides everything else.

Hypothetical worked example: a brand has a creator video with a strong organic comment thread, a 30-day code and a clean caption, but plans a 60-day campaign. Three answers are yes, yet the authorization check fails, so the Spark Fit Check says ask for a 60 or 365-day code before launch. Compare both formats in a clean split, using the methods in the A/B testing hub.

Common mistakes with TikTok Spark Ads

Common mistakes with TikTok Spark Ads come from treating the format as a simple boost button instead of a borrowed post with rules attached. Most of them cost reach or force a relaunch, and each one has a fix that belongs in the creator brief or the pre-launch check.

  • Asking for the code after the post goes live. The creator picks the period and may choose 7 days. Agree on it in the brief before filming.
  • Leaving the caption to chance. Captions cannot be edited after authorization. Approve caption, hashtags and tags before posting.
  • Deleting or hiding the organic post. A video must be un-authorized before deletion, and a private video becomes public once used. Tell creators which posts stay up.
  • Expecting Custom Identity to stay. Most new campaigns now need a linked TikTok account. Link it through Business Center and turn on "Show through ads only" for test creatives.
  • Judging success on likes. Engagement stays on the post, but the business result is conversions. Track every Spark Ad with UTM parameters and the TikTok Pixel.
  • Running one creator video everywhere. Creator content tires like any other ad. Plan new Spark Ads or ads-only variants before frequency climbs. Promote the creator's TikTok profile inside TikTok itself, because the Meta TikTok ad ban reportedly covers Facebook and Instagram ads that send people to TikTok in several markets.

FAQ

Do likes and comments from a Spark Ad show on the original TikTok video?

Yes. TikTok attributes the views, likes, comments, shares and follows a Spark Ad earns to the organic post it runs. That is the main difference with an ads-only video, which collects its engagement on a post that never appears on the profile.

Do TikTok Spark Ads cost more than regular TikTok ads?

No, TikTok does not charge a separate fee for Spark Ads. They are bought in the same auction as other ads in TikTok Ads Manager, with the same minimum budgets. The extra cost, if any, is what you pay a creator for the video and for the right to run it as an ad.

Can I run a creator's TikTok video as a Spark Ad without their code?

Not without their permission. The creator has to authorize the post, either by sending you a video code from the TikTok app or by authorizing their account to your Business Center or through a TikTok One project. Without that authorization, the post cannot be selected in Ads Manager.

Should I use Promote or Spark Ads to boost a TikTok video?

Use Promote when you want to boost one of your own videos from the TikTok app with a few taps and a simple goal. Use Spark Ads in TikTok Ads Manager when you need conversion tracking, detailed targeting, creator posts or several ads in one structured campaign.

How long does a TikTok Spark Ads code last?

The creator chooses the authorization period when generating the code: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days. Agree on the period before the creator posts, and pick one that covers the full campaign plus any extension you might want.
